Best area to stay in Lucerne

Where to stay in Lucerne is a question of location more than of any single address. We describe areas by what lies close to them and leave hotels, rooms and room rates out. If you search for Lucerne hotels, use a booking site of your choice once you know the area.

Two areas cover most plans. Around the station and the KKL you are next to the lake ships and the central car parks. In the old town you are near the bridges and the museums. Walking times below are the ones we can support, so they are not a general rule for every building in an area.

The station and KKL area

Close to ships and car parks.

The station and the KKL concert hall sit at the lake, next to the ship landing stages and the central car parks. This suits you if you plan several boat trips or arrive by car. Station forecourt works with changed bus stops run until 12.12.2026, and the landing stages stay accessible. Our page on getting there has the details for trains and parking.

The old town

Bridges, museums and the walk to the Lion Monument.

The old town lies on both banks of the Reuss. The Sammlung Rosengart is about 3 minutes on foot from the station, and the Lion Monument is about 15 minutes on foot from the station and the old town. Those two distances come from the museum and from Lucerne tourism and are meant as orientation. Read more in Lucerne old town and in the Lion Monument guide.

Staying by the lake

Weggis, Vitznau and Engelberg as starting points.

If your plans are on the mountains, a lakeside base can save a transfer. Weggis and Vitznau are access points to the Rigi: Weggis has an aerial cableway to Rigi Kaltbad and Vitznau has the cogwheel railway. Both are reached by ship from Lucerne. Engelberg is the starting place for Mount Titlis. Which of these suits you depends on the timetable of the days you plan, and none is better in general.

In the lake region you may also search for Lake Lucerne hotels or ask where to stay in Lake Lucerne more widely. Read our page on Weggis and Vitznau for the two villages. Check seasons and closures in the season calendar before you fix your dates.

Lucerne guest card

Overnight guests who pay the visitor tax receive the guest card. It is not for sale and it is personal. Your accommodation sends it shortly before arrival or hands it over at check-in.

The card gives free buses and trains in zone 10 in second class. Ships are excluded, so budget for lake trips separately. Hold on to the booking confirmation for the first journey to your accommodation.

Day trips beyond the lake

Some guests use Lucerne as a base for day trips into the Bernese Oberland. For the valley itself, see our Lauterbrunnen Valley guide. Trips closer to the lake are listed under Lucerne tours.
