Lucerne museum guide at a glance

Choosing a Lucerne museum is mostly a question of taste and time. The Swiss Museum of Transport is the large one and fills a day, especially with children. Sammlung Rosengart is a compact art collection a few minutes from the station, and the Kunstmuseum Luzern sits inside the KKL by the lake. All three have different closing days around Christmas, so check the dates below.

Two more museums have their own page: the Glacier Garden and the Bourbaki Panorama are covered on our Lion Monument page. For a wider plan of the city, see things to do in Lucerne.

Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus Luzern)

Museum ticket or day pass.

The museum ticket costs CHF 37 for adults, CHF 27 for students and apprentices under 26, and CHF 16 for children aged 6 to 15. Children under 6 enter free. It includes the exhibition and the Hans Erni Museum. The day pass costs CHF 62 for adults and CHF 29 for children aged 6 to 15. It adds the Swiss Chocolate Adventure, the day films in the film theatre and the planetarium day shows, and you do not need a seat reservation for those.

The museum is open 365 days a year. In the winter half year the hours are 10 to 17, and the Hans Erni Museum opens at 11. In winter the Swiss Chocolate Adventure runs from 11 to 16.20. Look at the opening times for the day you switch between summer and winter hours before you go. The Swiss Travel Pass gives a discount, not free entry, and only one discount applies at a time. Read more about the ride in our chocolate guide.

Exhibitions and museum tickets

Where to buy, and what a guest card does not cover.

Buy tickets for the Verkehrshaus and the other museums directly at the museum. The Lucerne guest card is not a museum pass: it gives overnight guests free buses and trains in zone 10, second class, and does not cover boats or museum entry. If you hold a museum pass, ask at the desk what it covers on the day.

The one exhibition among the offers on this page is the Loco 7 railway exhibition on the Rigi. The Rigi day ticket includes it, together with the rides Kräbel to Scheidegg, Vitznau to Rigi Kulm, Goldau to Rigi Kulm and Weggis to Kaltbad. The Weggis to Kaltbad line is under revision on weekdays from 16 to 27 November 2026, so check the operator before you go. See our Rigi guide for the full picture.
